“Virtual Insanity”

This week’s theme for my blog post is ‘virtual insanity‘ and the reason for this is simple… all this talk about emerging media platforms and virtual technology has left a certain Jamiroquai song stuck in my head.

Two days ago, I was involved in a discussion about moving the local news into the future and different methods to doing so. Recently we had a local story about a certain not-for-profit rappelling the outside of a very tall building in Jefferson County as a fundraiser. We had video which included GoPro footage, but I thought that the addition of 360 would have enhanced the experience a lot more!

There of course, is a cost associated with increasing technology to match the need of readers and viewers in the community.  When you are making the transition from all film to all digital, especially with a large business, you could be spending thousands and of course, with changing technology comes the need to constantly modernize your gear.

Now, this may sound like my area is behind the times… most legacy media companies are already at the point of good quality video from a variety of trending methods. I live in northern NY and we have been forgotten about (for the most part) when it comes to good quality internet service. So although we have yet to catch-up with emerging media platforms, we are slowly making headway. Click here to learn more about the technical challenges of living in a rural community.

I am hoping that the new technologies that are introduced in my Emerging Media Platforms class with the Communications@Syracuse program will give me a modern edge when reporting in the Northern, NY area.  I would like to work more with the Google Cardboard and 360 video.

**Updated, I plan to take some time this week to really explore all that Google cardboard has to offer. I do have the R2D2 version that was given out by Verizon a few years ago, which is right up my alley.
