The Second Screen. Ref #9

Technology is a wonderful thing and it is growing and changing at a rapid rate.  Just when I get comfortable with one thing, it’s old news and something bigger and more convenient has taken the lead in terms of popularity.

Back in the day, we would have television programming that would try to encourage some form of audience participation.  It is not a new thing to need to phone in a vote for a contestant or favorite song, it is also not a new thing for the public to be in communications with large media corporations or their programming.  However, what is different is the technology and tools or the means to which we do these things today.  Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites along with the availability of mobile web at our fingertips has allowed us to increase the speed of the transmittal.  It has also opened a door to allow more than just the recipient to review and respond to the message.  What may have been a two way conversation before, can now be commented on from across the country or around the world.

On occasion I will play along and vote for a dancer or singer.  But I only do this if I am alone.  Call me old fashioned, but I really find it to be rude when people are constantly on their mobile devices rather than participating in human interaction.  I will admit that if I recognize and actor/actress or want to follow up on information, I will grab my phone and explore for data gathering.  I generally bring this information back to the group that I am with for a discussion which then leads to a vicious cycle of the group grabbing their phones to do their own information gathering.

The second screen experience has changed how we gather information and when we gather information on a personal level as well as for the larger companies who can see or gain from the information or data that they are receiving from our searches.  There are many generations who have not yet caught on, but they are slowly learning from the younger generations that this is the new hot way to provide feedback and explore the world outside of their own home.
